Tips for Cleaning Vintage Chandeliers
How Often to Clean
Chandeliers should be thoroughly cleaned at least once a year. While an annual deep clean will keep the fixture looking great, keep a regular schedule to combat everyday dust.
Preparing to Clean
Take note of your chandelier’s design before you begin cleaning, so you can keep everything in its proper place. If you don’t feel comfortable handling the fixture or its hung too high, your best option is to enlist the help of a professional.
The Right Supplies
A pair of white gloves and soft, lint-free cloths are ideal materials for chandelier cleaning. You hope it doesn’t happen, but always be prepared in case a piece is dropped. To shield furniture from sharp and hard-to-find glass or crystal shards, a solid step ladder with pads and drop cloths are essential.
Alternate Light Sources
Since you will be turning off the power before cleaning your chandelier, make sure you have enough light to see. Set up alternative lighting nearby to help you perform the task.
Glass On or Off
There are two methods to cleaning chandeliers: Glass on and glass off. For the glass on method, prepare a cleaning solution of one-part isopropyl alcohol to four parts distilled water in a plastic spray bottle and spray a small amount on your cloth. Gently wipe the crystal or glass with the damp cloth and immediately dry it with a fresh cloth.
The glass off method can be time consuming but allows for a more thorough clean. To begin this process, you will need to take off all the crystal and glass. Using the same solution as the glass on method, gently clean each piece, then quickly rinse in clean water and dry with a soft cloth to prevent streaking. For chandeliers with heavy dirt and grime build-up, you may want to hand-wash the glass and crystal in lukewarm water with a mild dish soap.
In between cleanings, keep chandeliers looking great by dusting with a feather or lamb’s wool duster. Our showroom staff would be happy to give more advice on proper fixture cleaning; feel free to call us with any questions.
