How to Choose a Vintage Chandelier
Size Comes First
The very first step in the buying process is to determine the size chandelier your space can fit. There are two simple ways to find the appropriate width and height:
- Chandelier Width = Room Width + Room Length
- Chandelier Height = Room Height x 3
Choosing a fixture that’s too large could result in the living space appearing smaller than it is. The width and height – in inches – will help narrow down your selection of chandeliers.
Evaluate the Setting
Once you have a size range, also consider where you’re placing the fixture. Hanging location should be proportional to the fixture itself. If the chandelier will be hung over a small table in the breakfast nook, it’s width should be smaller than the table’s width.
Hanging height will also depend on the setting. In an open space like an entryway, the chandelier should be at least 7 feet off the ground. Rule of thumb for fixtures hanging above where people may sit or stand is about a yard from the base of the fixture to the top of the table. Luckily, many chandeliers come with chains in case height needs to be adjusted.
