Tips to Decorate Your Front Porch for Fall
Showcase Your Home
Start with Outdoor Lighting
Before you begin decorating, make sure you have enough exterior lighting to highlight the festive elements you’re about to add. With a flush mount or hanging light fixture on the porch and lamp post lights along the driveway, visitors and passerby can admire your mums, pumpkin displays and fall door wreath. General benefits of outdoor landscape lighting include:
- Complementing your home’s best features
- Increasing security of your property
- Helping guests find their way to the door
At Connecticut Lighting Centers, we have a large selection of outdoor LED light fixtures that you can keep on all night without worrying about the electricity bill. Not only can our showroom staff help you choose the right fixtures, but we can also come to your home for a consultation! Together, we can develop a lighting design layout that best suits your needs.
Depending on the type of fixture you choose, what’s the rule of thumb for proper display?
- Pendants, Lanterns & Flush Mounts: At least 6 inches above the door
- Wall Sconces: At least 66 inches from the porch floor
- Lamp Posts: Light element should be about one-quarter the size of the pole
Repurpose Old Lanterns
Rather than throwing away an old light fixture that no longer works, use it as a decoration! Simply remove the bulbs from hanging lanterns and replace them with flameless pillar candles. Then, decorate them with faux leaves and line your porch steps with the fixtures.
Add Colorful Elements
Fall does not have to be dull! Adding a pop of bright red or yellow will add livelihood to an earth tone autumn display. Set up some bright-colored wicker chairs, a throw rug or decorative pillows to bring fun to your fall home decor. If you prefer to keep the colors of your front porch neutral, metallic elements also stand out against brown and orange hues.
Have Fun with Pumpkins
There is so much more you can do with pumpkins than carve them! One fun idea is to decorate a pumpkin with your house number. Paint the pumpkin whatever color you like, then write the house number in white or black to make it stand out. Shine a deck light or spotlight on the pumpkin, so visitors can see the number from the road at night!
