3 Dorm Room Lighting Tips for College Students

Whether you’re returning to college or it’s your first semester this fall, you likely have your dream dorm design in mind. Students get excited about their bedding, school supplies and new clothes, but lighting is also an important consideration. What do you need to know about proper dorm room lighting?

Choose Adjustable Fixtures

Many activities go on inside a dorm room, from studying to reading and applying makeup. Each of these tasks requires a different level of lighting, but you may only have one or two dedicated fixtures in such a small space. Adjustable fixtures allow you to move the light in whichever direction you need.

When researching on the computer, you do not want light casting a glare on the screen, so you may adjust the fixture to shine above your workspace. While reading a book in bed, you would shine the light directly on the page in order to see better. In any scenario, college students should have the ability to control the light in their dorm room for maximum efficiency.

No Hard Wiring

It is unlikely a student would be allowed to hardwire a light fixture in a dorm room, so plug-in fixtures are the way to go. From table lamps to floor lamps and wall sconces, there are plenty of lighting varieties that come with plug-in connections.

As a general rule of thumb, remember not to overload a power strip if you need to use multiple outlets at one time, as doing so presents a fire hazard. Do not exceed 15 to 20 amps per surge protector.

String Lighting Safety

If you decide to decorate your dorm room with string lighting, keep safety in mind. The lighting should be approved for indoor use, cords should not be frayed and students should always unplug the lights before leaving the room. LED string lighting uses less energy and runs cooler, so you can worry less about potential fire hazards.
