A Guide to Art Deco Lighting

The term “Art Deco” originated in 1925 at a modern art exhibition in Paris. Yet the term did not come into common use until the 1960s, during a revival of the style. Art Deco has become one of the most popular and pervasive styles in design, from architecture to accessories and lighting.

Art Deco Features

Vintage Art Deco 2 Lt Table/Desk Lamp w/ Green Marbled Glass Accent, c. 1930While Art Deco has evolved over time, it began as a way to create a sleek, anti-traditional elegance that symbolized wealth and sophistication. Distinguishing features of the style include simple, clean shapes, geometric ornaments and fine materials.

Deco style borrowed from ancient and exotic cultures, including Aztec, Egyptian, American Indian, Asian and African elements, as well as classical antiquity and nature. Materials often used in Art Deco design include chrome and bronze, brushed aluminum exteriors, frosted glass and gold leaf embellishments.

Art Deco Lighting

The popularity of Art Deco continues due to its ability to complement many other design styles. Table lamps, chandeliers and floor lamps featuring deco style can be paired with many other furnishing styles to create eclectic and authentic living spaces.

Our Art Deco selection includes lamps, chandeliers and pendants that instantly transform living spaces. A few fixtures that characterize the deco style include:

  • Dark Brass Bead Ceiling Fixture with Peach Art Deco Streamlined Glass
  • Deco Bridge Floor Lamp with Round Jadeite and Geometric-Shaped Akro Agate Accents
  • Vintage Art Deco Two-Light Desk Lamp with Green Marbled Glass Accent

Many deco pieces work well with contemporary decor. For more inspiration, look for subtle Art Deco influences disguised as “contemporary” or “new modern”.
