Illuminating Your Bathroom to Maximize Potential
Overhead Lighting
For general illumination of your bathroom, have ceiling-mounted or recessed lighting installed. However, too many recessed fixtures cast shadows if they are not properly placed. If installed above where you stand at the sink, the harsh light can make you appear unflattering in the mirror. Your appearance at this angle as a result of improper lighting can be easily avoided by positioning your fixtures over the walkway area so you are lit from behind. To provide general illumination as well as a touch of design flair, you could install a small chandelier or several pendant lights in the center of the room. Any light fixtures that you choose should be connected to a dimmer switch, so you can soften or brighten the light at your convenience.
Task Lighting
This type of lighting is key for when you are grooming. Whether shaving, applying makeup or styling your hair, the proper amount of light in the right places can help you avoid making a mistake. If you cannot see well enough, you could end up cutting yourself with the razor or burning your ear with the curling iron. For the vanity area, place a bath bar fixture above the mirror or place sconces on either side. At Connecticut Lighting, we carry Feiss and Sea Gull Lighting bath bars that will add elegance and radiance to your bathroom. In the shower, place recessed cans with shower-rated trims directly above where you stand for safety.
Fixture Placement
According to the American Lighting Association, there are specific measurement guidelines to adhere to for the best look and overall spread of light. The center of a sconce should be 60 inches up from the ground and, since it is recommended that you have one on either side of a mirror, 28 inches apart. A bath bar should be mounted 78 inches high. All fixtures around your bathroom vanity should be directed toward you at a 45-degree angle.
