How to Light Different Areas of the Kitchen
Quality Kitchen Lighting
Counterspace
Whether you have limited or expansive counterspace, the area needs to be well-lit. When you’re not slicing and dicing on the counter, you could be plating food or writing a check.
Rather than casting shadows on your workspace, under-cabinet lighting provides the general or concentrated illumination needed to complete any task. For kitchens with limited space, under-cabinet lighting doesn’t take up any additional room!
Dining Table
If your home lacks a separate room for dining, make sure the kitchen table is well-lit. A pendant or chandelier would function well as a focal point; for larger tables, your family could benefit from multiple fixtures. By installing a dimmer switch, homeowners can dim the light for romantic meals or turn it up while paying bills.
Kitchen Island
Depending on the other amenities of your kitchen, this area could be used for meal prep or eating. In either case, an overhead fixture with a dimmer switch can focus light when and where you need it. For instance, you may dim the lights to eat but want the illumination bright when working with a knife. Based on the size of the island, you may need one chandelier or several pendants spaced evenly apart.
Storage Areas
A common gripe among homeowners is a lack of cabinetry in the kitchen. If you don’t have the cabinet space to store your cooking equipment, there’s a really cool concept in kitchen lighting called the pot-rack chandelier. This fixture functions as a source of general illumination, as well as an area to hang pots, pans and cooking utensils!
Stove & Sinks
When the sun goes down, you can’t solely count on the stove’s surface light to help you see while cooking dinner. Recessed lighting above the stove and sink provides the task lighting needed to make sure plates are clean and pots don’t overboil. As a general rule of thumb, there should be about four to six square feet of ceiling space between recessed cans.
