Outdoor Lighting Updates for Spring
Landscape Inspiration
Check for Winter Damage
The yard is an essential factor of your home’s “curb appeal” – how attractive the property looks from the street. Inspect the outdoor areas, including the lawn, garden and shrubbery, for any damage caused by winter weather. If you keep your exterior lights up year-round:
- Make sure all wires are intact
- Clean the salt and debris off lenses
- Remove bulbs and wipe the sockets clean with steel wool
- Replace dead bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs
- Make sure outdoor outlets have waterproof covers
Yard Maintenance
Outdoor lighting brings your landscape to life and provides an extra layer of security. If the grounds are overgrown, the best features of your home will not be highlighted. When winter weather goes into hibernation, make sure to remove all fallen branches and debris from the yard.
As temperatures rise, reseed areas of the lawn that have been affected by snow and de-icer, so new grass grows in lush and green. Trim back unkept shrubbery, especially around light fixtures. Finally, remove the old mulch from flower beds and re-mulch for spring growth.
Installing New Fixtures
We can come to your home to help design a lighting layout that’s perfect for your landscape! The experts at Connecticut Lighting Centers can help with everything from measurements to fixture placement and selection.
Once this process is complete, wait until the ground has completely thawed to install new fixtures. Remember to update any timers to coincide with the start of Daylight Saving Time!
Seasonal Maintenance
Maintenance does not stop once the landscape has been cleaned up from winter and new fixtures are installed. Continue to care for your lawn and plants, so your landscape looks its best when lit after sundown. When mowing the grass, know where ground fixtures are located to avoid hitting them.
Also keep your light fixtures clean and functional throughout the season. When cleaning exterior light fixtures, make sure to first turn off the circuit breaker to all outdoor lighting! The decorative globes that cover light bulbs can typically be polished with soap and warm water, but you can always contact our staff with cleaning questions.
