Choosing the Perfect Bedroom Light

The perfect light fixture has a connection with every feature of a room, from the furniture to the ambience. When it comes to the bedroom, proper lighting can be the finishing detail needed to transform your space into the relaxing atmosphere you want.

What should you consider when choosing a focal point fixture for your bedroom?

Ceiling Height

Ceilings less than nine feet tall are considered “low” and call for flush or semi-flush mount lighting. A flush mount is fixed to the ceiling, only dropping a few inches. If you have a little more headroom, a semi-flush mount drops down lower into the area. The right semi-flush mount can complement your existing decor and bring the space together.

If your main source of lighting is such a small fixture, you want it to stand out. Many of our vintage flush and semi-flush mount fixtures have exposed light bulbs or glass shades, which provides the unique look you’re looking for your bedroom.

If your bedroom ceiling is taller than nine feet, go bold with a chandelier. Chandeliers are often the best option for overhead lighting to illuminate a large space. They brighten the room by spreading light but can also be placed on a dimmer when you want less light. You’ll love our selection of refurbished vintage chandeliers from as early as the 19th century!

The most important thing to remember is that the size of your chandelier should be proportionate to the room size. Your home may have tall ceilings, but if the bedroom is cramped, avoid an oversized chandelier that makes the space look even more cluttered.

Task Lighting

After a long day, the last thing you want to do is fold the laundry or another mundane task but it’s often necessary. If you spend a lot of time doing chores or at-home work in your bedroom, you need appropriate task lighting. This could be wall sconces on either side of the bed or a table lamp for the desk.

Before you go out and buy a bunch of fixtures, make sure the lighting design accommodates your needs. For example, you may fall in love with an exquisite floor lamp but when you get it home, it doesn’t throw enough light for reading.

Fixture Placement

Once you’ve accomplished the goal of choosing your fixtures, it’s time to place them. Starting with the focal fixture, a good rule of thumb is to place it in the center of the room.

From there, work in other fixtures. Does it make sense to have wall sconces above bedside table lamps? Maybe you place the sconces on either side of the bed and the table lamps on nearby dressers. Measure carefully to make sure task lighting fixtures shine from above. In any case, the light should be evenly dispersed. If one area of the room is overly bright and another is left in darkness, your bedroom lighting is off balance.
